چکیده

This paper outlines an approach for investigating the aspects of mechanical deformation which are relevant to intergranular stress corrosion cracking. Mechanical testing, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and optical microscopy are used to investigate the difference in mechanical behavior between solutionized, lightly sensitized (1 hour at 600 C), and heavily sensitized (50 hours at 600 C) tested at ambient and elevated temperature, respectively. Additionally, the difference in mechanical behavior at room temperature and elevated temperatures is characterized. Slip trace analysis revealed statistically significant variation in slip distribution due to sensitization but indicated no change due to temperature. In addition, sensitization resulted in qualitative changes in the grain boundary sliding behavior. This work has developed an experimental method for analyzing the deformation behavior which can be employed for further research.

Effects of irradiation on intergranular stress corrosion cracking

Intergranular stress corrosion cracking &YSCC) is a pervasive and generic problem in current light water reactor and advanced reactor designs that can lead to widespread component failure. IASCC is believed to be due to either to changes in the grain boundary composition, the microstructure or the water chemistry and corrosion potential. Of greatest interest are the changes in composition and m...

Effect of Microstructure Factors on Stress Corrosion Behavior of Mg-xSn Alloys (x=2, 5, 8mass%)

The effect of microstructure on the stress corrosion behavior of Mg–Sn alloys was investigated using a bent-beam method. The effects of an Mg2Sn phase and Sn in the matrix on stress corrosion were investigated. Mg2Sn phase mainly formed at the grain boundary. The volume fraction of the Mg2Sn phase increased with increasing Sn content, and the morphology of Mg2Sn changed from spherical to a semi...

Acoustic Emission during Stress Corrosion Cracking Test

AE monitoring from various types of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) has been conducted for the past 15 years in our laboratory. This paper discusses AE results of active-path dissolution-type SCC of austenitic stainless steel in chloride solution and fused salt, fluoride and polythionic acid solutions, brass in ammonia (Mattosson's solution), and carbon steels in nitrite solution. Transgranular...

Effect of Grain Boundary Microchemistry on IGSCC of Alloy 132 in a Simulated BWR Environment

Intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) of Alloy 132 weld metal in light water reactor (LWR) structural components is a great concern. The microstructure of Alloy 132 is dendritic and the grain boundaries that are parallel to the direction of the dendrites growth are known to be most susceptible to cracking. In order to correlate the grain boundary microstructure to IGSCC, and in genera...

Hydrogen-assisted stress corrosion cracking of high strength steel Division of Surface and Corrosion Science School of Chemical Science and Engineering Royal Institute of Technology, KTH

In this work, Slow Strain Rate Test (SSRT) testing, Light Optical Microscopy (LOM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to study the effect of microstructure, corrosive environments and cathodic polarisation on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of two grades of high strength steels, Type A and Type B. Type A is manufactured by quench and tempered (Q&T) method. Type B, a normalize stee...
